Vote NO on Issue 20
As a Lorain County citizen, we have all received the mailers regarding Issue 20, encouraging us to vote yes. However, keep this in mind:
-
The increase in staffing (four new commissioners, their staff and appointed new positions) will add approximately $2 million per year, according to the State Auditor's Association numbers.
-
The map is split in such a way that voting power is transferred to townships rather than larger towns (Avon, Avon Lake, Amherst, Lorain, etc.). Look at the mailed map and how Lorain City was split to see how this would happen.
-
The issue replaces people who are elected and can be voted out with people appointed by the board. This guts the sheriff department and county auditor offices. (All of the candidates for sheriff oppose this plan.)
-
There are other real issues with the plan and it’s an attempt to get around the repeated successful attempts to consider charter government, which would require an ELECTED county executive.
It is for these reason that we are urging citizens to vote NO on Issue 20.
